The revolutionary feminist assembly we call Ladyfest began in Olympia, Washington, as a celebration of the artistic and intellectual pursuits of women, and marked the 80th anniversary of a woman's right to vote in this country. Ladyfest Olympia opened the door to a new landscape where people of all backgrounds could come together in the spirit of dissemination and appreciation of independent feminist arts and thinking, and beckoned us all to find a home there. And we have. Ladyfest serves as homage to the women who have come before us, to those who walk among us, and to those who will take our place, to their lives, to their dreams, to their passions and achievements. Ladyfest also serves as a mighty weapon of feminist education and empowerment amid the battlegrounds of our societies and cultures, our stages and canvases, our homes and workplaces.
Ladyfest is, in very plain terms, a fundraising women's arts event. Ladyfest Olympia was a huge success, bringing over 2,000 visitors to the community and raising over $30,000 for two local women's charities. Subsequent Ladyfest ventures have benefited such organizations as RAINN (the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) and Women in the Director's Chair (a Chicago-based international media arts and activist center).
Ladyfest South, to be held on October 10-13, 2002, in Atlanta, GA, will bring a diverse array of artists and thinkers to the South, and much needed funds to a select, or select few, Southern-based women's organizations. Southern belles will be raisin' hell, and raining the power of art, expression, diversity, and community down on Dixie. Ladyfest South 2002 will benefit Refuge House (Tallahassee, FL) and Project Safe (Athens, GA) and is fiscally sponsored SONG (Southerners On New Ground).
